Manderscheider
Burgenstieg

In the election for
“Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail 2020
the Manderscheider Burgenstieg (with Rittersteig) was voted third in the category “day tours”.

The Manderscheider Burgenstieg with Rittersteig is one of the partner trails of the Eifelsteig in the Volcanic Eifel.

The almost 6-kilometer-long circular hiking trail leads around the charming small town of Manderscheid, which is known for its castles separated only by the valley of the Lieser River.

The hike takes about two hours and is classified as “medium” challenged.

Circular hiking trail
“Preserve Creation

The Salm Valley, chosen in 1134 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux as the most suitable place for a monastery, still has the special aura that may have appealed to the founder of the monastery 900 years ago.

Today, the monastery area welcomes you with an atmosphere of silence and gathering that is soothing and relaxing.

From this silence you are invited to walk along the “Path of Creation” through the Salm Valley and let yourself be addressed by the meditation panels on stone steles. Information boards give information about the events in our valley.

You can find a description of the path here.

The new
Castles – Via Ferrata

“The hike of a special kind”

A unique nature experience around the spectacular backdrop of the two Manderscheider castles. You can now climb around the castles!

Germany’s best “extra-Alpine via ferrata” is now officially open. It consists of three stages, each of which can be experienced individually or connected by short hiking passages.

The Burgen-Klettersteig may only be climbed with personal safety equipment for via ferrata (helmet, climbing harness and via ferrata set) and requires physical fitness, surefootedness and a head for heights. Alpine dangers!

Abbey Himmerod

The Cistercian church is open for you – not only for Sunday masses.

The Cistercian monastery of Himmerod is the oldest foundation of the order of Bernard of Clairvaux on German soil. The initially wooden monastery complex, which the monks had moved into in 1136, was replaced by the stone Romanesque church building consecrated in 1178. Subsequently, the monastery of Himmerod developed into a religious, cultural and economic center of the Eifel.

Today it is a place of inner contemplation and a place where you can enjoy internationally recognized organ concerts played on the famous Klais organ in special acoustics… a unique musical experience!

The Old Mill
in Himmerod

Since 1998, in the old mill on the old monastery grounds, you can get a lively insight into the history of the Cistercians in general and Himmerod Abbey in particular.

A separate section in the Gothic attic is dedicated to the spirituality of the Cistercians. The magnificent architecture of the Cistercians is recalled to the visitors by means of a Romanesque model of Himmerod Abbey and the model of the church restored in the 1950s.

Mill museum Schweich
in the upper Molitorsmühle

The ancestors of Hotel Molitors Mühle in Eichelhütte come from this “Obere Molitorsmühle” in Schweich. In 1870, Nikolaus Molitor, a son of Johann Molitor from Schweich, had transformed the ironworks in Eichelhütte into a grain mill. Only in 1917 the guesthouse was added.

The descendants have transformed the Obere Molitorsmühle with all their love into a jewel of a museum. The Branz siblings are directly related to us and offer guided tours in their museum. Through the completely preserved mill technology on four floors you will get an insight into the everyday life of the miller’s craft. Here you can still experience how the water wheel is set in motion and then the grain is ground through the mill.

Clara Viebig Centre

Clara Viebig – The Eifel poetess tells about the life in the village Eisenschmitt, where iron was produced for many centuries, especially she reports about the social developments that happened in the village after the decline of the iron industry from 1860.

Maarmuseum Manderscheid

The museum focuses on the formation of the “eyes of the Eifel”, as the deep blue maars are also called. A walk-through model of a maar vividly illustrates how a maar is constructed. In showcases you can admire typical Eifel landscapes in miniature. The highlight of the Maar museum, however, is the “Eckfelder Urpferdchen”. This is an almost completely preserved skeleton of a pregnant mare from 45 million years ago. Science is really fun at the Maarmuseum!

Oil mill in Bruch

The grinding mill of Bruch is one of the oldest salt mills, it is already mentioned in the freedom letter for the valley Bruch from the year 1284 as a ban mill. As early as 1909, the miller Matthias Molitor supplied some private buildings next to his mill operation with electrical energy. He was the brother of Nikolaus Molitor, who had bought the mill here in Eichelhütte.

The oil mill has been completely preserved in its building structure until today and was extensively renovated and repaired in the years 1984/85 including the entire mill technology. The grinding mill with pan grinder and its two runner stones, heating furnace and press and the old chamber of the grinder with furnishings can be visited at any time by the current owner Mrs. Birgit Molitor (of course also related to us).

Eifel bell foundry
in Brockscheid

The craft of bell casting has been practiced there since 1620. At that time, they did not have a fixed workshop at a particular location, but moved from community to community to be able to cast bells on the spot. Today you can get not only large bronze bells, but also brass and bronze bells, all kinds of bronze art castings, bronze and iron stove plates, and of course we can make your own art casting according to your wishes.

If you return after the tour with a big bronze bell, please do not ring too loud!

The historic town of Bernkastel

The town of Bernkastel is full of historic buildings and modern hospitality. In the middle of one of the largest wine-growing areas in Germany, you can stroll, dine, take boat tours and much more.

Visit our wellsprings

The word spring is called “Drees” in our country and comes from the Celtic “Dreyse”, which means “bubbling spring”. It is related to the old Germanic word “Thrais” for bubbling or whirling. In the Volcanic Eifel, the word has been preserved in dialect and refers to local mineral water and carbonic acid springs. Almost every place here has its Drees, to which it lends its name. Among them are such famous ones as Dauner, Gerolsteiner and Dreiser.

Vulkanhof goat dairy

In Gillenfeld, on the beautiful Pulvermaar and in the heart of the unspoiled landscape of the Volcanic Eifel, lies the goat cheese dairy Vulkanhof. The family business was awarded as one of the best cheese dairies in all of Germany (‘Der Feinschmecker’) and is appreciated for high-quality and fine, regional goat cheese products.

Not only can you taste cheese there in the farm store or even buy it, you can also book farm tours, go hiking with goats and even visit a cheese school.
